In 1907 the copyright expired and there were new illustrated editions from the likes of Arthur Rackham, Charles Robinson, Charles Pears, Mabel Lucie Atwell, Alice B. This ninth edition represents Carroll’s finally revised text. Later editions are also collectable: the third edition from 1867, the fourth edition from 1867, the fifth and sixth editions from 1868, the seventh edition from 1886, the eighth edition from 1891 and the ninth edition from 1897. This is known as the “second (first published) edition”. The book was reset and, although dated 1866, 4,000 copies were released in time for Christmas 1865. The sheets were eventually sold off to an American publisher who used them with a new title page.

Only 23 of the “1865 Alices” are known to survive. The book was originally printed in 1865 but Carroll soon heard that the book’s illustrator John Tenniel was unhappy with the quality of the printing and so the whole edition was suppressed. The publication of the first Alice book is an intricate story.
